The icon of the Holy Trinity represents the 3 angels, who visited Abraham (Genesis ch. 18). Abraham prostrated before them and called them "Lord". On the icon Abraham & Sarah are standing waiting to serve the 3 angels - the Lord, who are sitting. That event in the Old Testament foreshadows the clear revelation of the Holy Trinity in the New Testament
